“The Book Thief” (2006) by Markus Zusak was selected as this year’s summer reader. It is part of the Mount’s Distinguished Freshmen Author Series. This book immerses the reader into the tumultuous world of a young girl, Liesel, who is essentially being brought up by foster parents Hans and Rosa Hubermann in the small town of Molching, during the Nazi era. Liesel’s interest in reading, compels her to become a book thief. More broadly, this book is a colorful description of bystanders and rescuers of Jews during WWII. Uniquely, the story is narrated by the character of death, who follows Liesel throughout the war to the end of her life.
In addition to penning “The Book Thief,” Mr. Zusak has also written “The Messenger,” “When Dogs Cry,” “Fighting Ruben Wolfe,” and “The Underdog.”
